Peridot Mine in China

What an incredible experience! Every mine I visit is unique, but the Yiqisong Nanshan peridot mine in the Changbai Mountains is truly something special. I’m fascinated by the leopard-like patterns the olivine creates in the basalt, and every so often you spot a perfect peridot crystal nestled in the matrix. This hidden corner of China will soon be home to the largest peridot mine in the world. Using a cut-and-fill method, it covers just 2 square kilometres yet has an impressive 21-year life span. The tunnels are lined with concrete for safety, but behind it lies that beautiful patterned olivine.
It was a first for me, giving a talk inside a mine! I never tire of seeing nature’s treasures, and it’s amazing to compare the different grades of peridot, all from Fuli Gemstones. With less iron content, these gems display the most vibrant green.
