Alluvial Artisanal Madagascan Sapphire Mines

In March 2020, I journeyed to Madagascar to explore artisanal sapphire mines in research for my book, ‘Sapphire’. Gemstones here are sourced from ancient riverbeds. Nestled in remote rural landscapes, these small-scale operations rely on miners working by hand, gently washing gravel to uncover colourful treasures formed over millions of years. Seeing the process up close highlighted the skill, perseverance, and community spirit that shapes the country’s gemstone trade. Beyond the mining sites, Madagascar’s natural beauty and cultural warmth left a lasting impression. The experience was both unforgettable and profoundly enriching, offering a rare glimpse into a living gem heritage.
