Cambodia & Thailand

In March 2016, I embarked on a journey through Cambodia and Thailand to visit their historic ruby and sapphire mining regions, of which the deposits straggle across both borders. In Cambodia, I explored mines in Pailin, which once produced a lot of sapphire and ruby in 1960 and 1970. Walking the gravel beds and watching miners search for gems by hand gave me a deep appreciation for the traditional techniques still used today. In Thailand’s Chanthaburi province, I witnessed the cutting and heat treatment processes that has made the region a hub for coloured gemstones for generations. The trip was a vibrant blend of history, craftsmanship, and the enduring allure of precious stones.
