Gemfield’s Ruby Mine in Mozambique

In June 2016, I travelled to Mozambique to visit Gemfields’ Montepuez Ruby Mine, an alluvial deposit that has helped make Mozambique one of the world’s leading ruby producers. Watching skilled teams recover these vivid red gems from ancient gravel beds was fascinating, each stone holding millions of years of geological history. The process was a blend of precision, patience, and respect for the land. Beyond the mine, Mozambique’s beauty unfolded in golden savannahs, thriving wildlife, and warm, welcoming communities. It was an unforgettable journey into the source of some of the most captivating rubies found today.
